School's Out and a chick update

Thanks to Pinterest, I had the desire to kick off summer with a bang! I saw this idea to hang a large banner on your front porch as a welcome home to your kids on the last day of school. Well, peeps, I did one better and although it was 5 days ago, the kids are still talking about it (more Gabe and Adri than Nate...but that still counts)!

Our goal this summer, on top of doing fun activities, is to get Nate pumped about reading. So, I've been brainstorming on ways to do this (and searching Pinterest). On top of our 'Mommy Summer School,' we're also doing a reading contest with some of our friends. If Nate reads 1000 minutes before August and Gabe and Adri read 100 books (with my help), we're having a surprise party with our other Summer Readers! Those details to come...

So, anyway, I purchased several books that Nate likes (Magic Tree House, Nate the Great, Calendar Mysteries and Garfield) at the used bookstore and tied them to the end of balloons that had words on them (swimming, library, museum, ice cream) describing what we'd be doing this summer. The first balloon, had a poem on it...

And of course, we celebrated the last day of school with homemade ice cream...have I mentioned how much our family LOVES ice cream? Any excuse we have to eat it, we do!

So, as I mentioned, we're only on day 5, but Nate is eagerly reading (after I gently push him to the bookshelf), and Gabe and Adri couldn't be more elated about checking off those smiley faces on their charts! So, summer reading is in full swing and so is our field trip calendar. This week is packed full...concert in the park, library, birthday party, Lego store, Build a bear for Adri's birthday (someone please tell me how my 'petite' 9 pound 5 ounce baby girl turned into a 3 year old), pottery store, doctor's appt, Mounds park and Children's Museum. And, we get to celebrate Adri's birthday on Saturday with a homemade Chicken Parmeasean Dinner, homemade ice cream and strawberry cake! Can't wait!

Egg update...

They're looking good. Not much to see on a daily basis except these little gems sitting in a box, swaying from side to side in their little cradles.

However, when I pick up these beauties, sit them in their candler (empty toilet paper roll), and head to the closet with a flashlight in hand, the anticipation of what I'll find almost has me doing cartwheels. But I don't because I don't want to hurt the eggs...well...that and I've never done a cartwheel!

The smiley faces mean that we've spotted a moving chick inside! And even though I've already confirmed life inside of this egg, I'm checking again, anyway. I can do this because they're my eggs and I'm moderately obsessed with this project. I have confirmed, by the way, that candling these babies so often does no harm to the life inside as long as it's only done every 24 to 48 hours. I will admit, though, that keeping my hands off these eggs everyday is a hard thing to accomplish!

It's really hard to see in this picture, but the shady spot in the middle in a baby chick! It's looking good...measuring about 1 1/2 inches and moving like crazy! It kind of looks like an upside down U. Roughly 7 - 9 days to go!

Happy summer, readers!
